Breakage :(

This is not something that I have just noticed in the past few mths, but its a problem I have faced for awhile now. I have just decided to post about it now, being that Im looking for some additional input. I dont use small-toothed combs, nor do I brush my hair. I dont do alot of manipulation to my hair, yet I still have breakage. I comb from the ends to roots, and I even take my time detangling during washing, so what gives?
Is it possible that some form of breakage is inevidentable for me? I have suspected for awhile now that my hair maybe protein sensitive, so I have made all efforts to use no products that contain proteins. Yet, with the new J/A/S/O/N poo and cons Im using (which is a moisturizing) has plant protein in it, but in small amounts.
Its a bit of a struggle to find a moisturizing poo and con that is moisturing, yet sulfate and parabens free, but doesnt have any form of protein in it.
Ive noticed at my last wash this past sunday, that 85-90% of the hairs I see coming out is shedded hair with the bulbs attached, but I do still find a fair amount of small broken hairs. Whats a girl to do? I have really really fine strands, so I wonder if no matter how careful I am or the products I do or dont use, I will still have "some" breakage.

Your thoughts? IM FRUSTRATED!!!!

  1. I think a piece here and there is unavoidable no matter what we do. Don't fret.

I use Aubrey Organic's honeysuckle rose moisturizing conditioner and it is 100% protein free. I am protein sensitive too and I really enjoy this conditioner a lot.

  2. I'm sorry to hear that. This is the first time I'm hearing about anyone being "protein sensitive" with their hair in general. Certain hair will shed more than others, and I don't think you can do anything about it. The fact that you have gotten this far by knowing what product to use and how to take care your hair will at least help the shedding or breakage to happen less frequent. I hope more of the natural hair guru will chime in some more. I'm curious to find out if they is anyway out of the breakage you having.

  3. Thanks ladies for chiming in. It is frustrating to say the less when your being as careful as possible but still getting breakage.
@ Ms-GG does the Aubrey brand have sulfates or parabens in it? Also, do you use the poo or do you CO wash only?

  4. Hi Carmen!! Thanks again for passing by my blog and following! It is much appreciated!
First of all, let me say that I have been in the same shoes as you. I was experiencing breakage like crazy and I was trying everything, in the process I also got frustrated.
So let me say that I totally understand how you feel.
You say you "comb your hair from the roots", sis I would advice you to stop doing that. Excess tension and pulling of the hair can lead to serious breakage that might not happen at the same time but little by little.
Another thing you said is that you think you are protein sensitive. I advice you to be sure because not everybody is always protein sensitive. You might be today and not be next month. Please make sure and take the strand test. I would not at this point advice you to totally avoid protein, just avoid products with lots of it. You say you only use one product with a bit of protein, well I doubt that can cause so much continual breakage.
Your hair might also be moisture deficient. Try testing if your hair is not moisturized enough.
Try all your products and see if your hair responds well to them, try to be attentive. Some products seal off moisture, others make the hair hard and stiff etc.
Try and find out if you have hard water where you live. hard water is something that can cause magnesium/calcium build up and these minerals if not eliminated can cause serious breakage, especially if you do not use a clarifying shampoo. Hard water was one of my culprits and still is a culprit
Another thing you have to have in mind is that natural hair undergoes breakage, someway or the other, so do not be started when you see a few strands when washing or styling but I understand yours is more that a few strands.
One thing that will help with frustration is not to think about the breakage, go on styling your hair (after you have singled out the culprits) and do not focus on breakage.
I really hope that has helped, please do not hesitate to ask any questions if you have any.
    God bless.

  5. Hi, Funbi

Thanks for stopping by my blog...I recently found urs and has found it very informative. I think you may have misread me above..Im not combing from the roots down, but rather from the ends of my hair working towards my roots, LOL. If I tried it the other way I would be hairless and in some pain lol...
I have yet to get a shower filter as I discussed in my entery on HARD vs SOFT WATER and I suspect its has something to do with my breakage.
I read your posting on finding balance with protein and moisturizing. VERY INFORMATIVE!! This I will continue to work at!! I think this winter weather is another factor being that this is my 1st time wearing my own hair out in ages, so Im now able to see the full effects of winter on my hair for the first time. I know I will look to reference your blog very very again soon. Please dont be a stranger around these parts. Thanks for following!
